Let's clear something up:
1. When you buy an iPhone you either pay the full amount (with most
going to Apple) or a discounted amount subsidized by the carrier (AT&T,
Verizon).
2. The 2-year contract is with your carrier, not with Apple.

Apple is certainly not exploiting a monopoly. Certainly their
subscription service does appear to be a monopolistic practice. Apple is
not a monopoly as there is a lot of competition out there. We'll have to
see how this plays out. I personally prefer Android based phones at the
moment, and in the future, Android or Linux based tablets. Right now,
IMHO, the Android tablets are not as good as the iPads are.
