This is always something that has driven me nuts about Linux. My problem with the gnome 3 presentation is that while the developers "don't think people should need 4 applications to work their ipod" they didn't specifically answer what to do if you *do* need four apps to work the device. We all know one application that does everything would be ideal, but since such an application doesn't exist what is a gnome3 user to do? That's kinda my point. It's like people running for state office on a platform of federal issues. It's not in their power to fix it. In fact they promote the problem by putting their eggs in baskets with holes in them. Check out the stats on their beloved Rhythmbox (which I can't use because of a bug they refuse to fix causes it to crash for me) https://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=rhythmbox
