Looked to me like all sensors-detect did was update sysconfig (to store the list of kernel modules somehwere), at least on my distro. And my manual efforts to invoke 'modprobe' were insufficient. But the init script was what did the trick. Some things about Linux remain black magic, despite decades of experience and tweaking. -rich
