I'm going to answer my own question, thanks to insights from Google's Webmaster tools... Apparently the site has been compromised, with some added JavaScript page content that is performing "cloaking" - presenting normal content to normal users and different content (which looks like a Warez site) to search engines. It will lead to being delisted by Google if it isn't fixed. Coincidentally (I think not), I've been getting a lot of ads from services offering to improve my search engine results.
