I eventually found out what turned my Synology DS508 into a "brick" and was able to fix it. The embarrassing answer is: user error. The configuration software, Synology Assistant, requires some additional UDP ports (9997, 9998, 9999) in order to access the NAS. As soon as I opened them up via iptables on my client computer, Synology Assistant found the NAS and I was able to reinstall the OS and get it running again. -- Dan Barrett dbarrett at blazemonger.com
