What is Debian going with? Are they dropping GNOME entirely, or just

It certainly can't help if all the most popular distributions abandon
GNOME 3.

What, if any, issues have you ran into in getting the latest version of
applications to work? Do you need to track down non-standard packages
for your apps?

Have you tried Mate (2.0 fork) or Cinnamon (3.0 fork)?
