I thought I'd read that they are pretty much ignored, and that only directly contacting your legislators in (hand)writing or by telephone is considered to be taken seriously by them. The problem with them (as I understand it, and it seems logical enough to me) is that they are too easy to participate in, and there's no way to verify that the signatories are constituents, or even exist at all... -- Derek D.
