What exactly, was lavabit's service offering, anyway? If you're going to interact with the normal SMTP email system ... you can encrypt attachments and so forth ... but a lot of information is leaked in the unprotected fields, like to/from/subject/etc. But that's impossible to change. So what exactly did they offer? A communication service that's completely different from email? With perhaps, an email notification interface, that notifies you to login via https to receive your message? That's all I can think of. And it wasn't just lavabit. There was another company shut down too.
