[Discuss] Lavabit Email Shutdown

What exactly, was lavabit's service offering, anyway?

If you're going to interact with the normal SMTP email system ... you can encrypt attachments and so forth ... but a lot of information is leaked in the unprotected fields, like to/from/subject/etc.

But that's impossible to change. So what exactly did they offer? A communication service that's completely different from email? With perhaps, an email notification interface, that notifies you to login via https to receive your message?

That's all I can think of.

And it wasn't just lavabit. There was another company shut down too.
