The only other thing I can think of is that maybe there are some kernel command-line options that Ubuntu might set (for compatibility's sake) that force an old IDE mode (although admittedly I didn't see anything to indicate that in dmesg). Can you cat /proc/cmdline and post the results? (feel free to scrub any UUID-looking things, those aren't relevant). I'd also be curious to see the difference in /proc/cmdline with the Knoppix. Matt
