[Discuss] Why are all my hard drives slow on Ubuntu? (new computer)



SOLVED!

Switching to a 64-bit kernel did the trick. I booted on the Ubuntu 13.04
64-bit live CD, and disk operations are speedy.

Thank you to everybody who helped out with suggestions and the occasional
snarky comment about 32-bit PAE! :-)
