To be honest, I've found it easier and less time-consuming to reinstall.

Alternatively, if VMware is the target then you can use the VMware 
converter tool to clone the running VM. I used this method the last time 
I needed to migrate a VM. It works, but it may take a few tries to get 
the settings right.
