Because I did. Then I spent another 15 seconds looking at the manual, which says that the printer supports parallel and USB. OP, can your friend drop a couple hundy on a new printer? If so, I've had great luck with Brother, and they have this: http://www.cnet.com/products/brother-hl-3170cdw/
