All the mail clients that I know of, attempt to intelligently use many fields to determine threading. If there is a clear reply-to-message-id, then obviously it wins. But sometimes that's not present, so it looks at other fields, including the subject. I can say this much: I have posted this exact same topic on multiple mailing lists, and it would seem, that some or all of them strip the message id's (or something) or simply, the message id matching is sufficient but not necessary to be considered a thread, or something... because I have threads which are actually separate from each other on separate mailing lists being displayed as if they were the same thread, just because the subject almost matches.
