Gotchas? Oh, I just commented on this in Eric's thread about postgresql. Forget fink and macports. Go with homebrew. But first install XCode and XCode command line tools. After that, it's very rare I need to install anything from homebrew (or formerly macports or fink). Usually the only thing I *do* install via homebrew is wget.
