There are other X display managers less spare looking than xdm that probably wouldn't have that dependency. When I used debian I was quite fond of wdm, I think it was. If you want more glitz, SLiM seems to offer it without the heavy dependencies: https://github.com/data-modul/slim/blob/master/INSTALL Seems to me I've seen people comment positively on it. -- Mike Small smallm at panix.com
