Hi, everyone. Thank you for your great replies! I hope this additional detail is useful. (Yep, means problem not solved yet.) Greg: I followed your numbered steps, which were great, through #3. At #4, I see your screenshot. However, the list on the left contains only two items: Wired Network proxy Airplane Mode is off, but there is no Wireless item on the right, and no wireless networks are listed. Greg and Mike: I opened the terminal window and entered this command: sudo service network-manager restart I put in my password. For a while, a handy Enable Wi-Fi option appeared in a menu at the top of the window. I clicked it! But still, it didn't discover my local wi-fi network, so I thought, "I'll reboot, and when it loads up, it will find my Wi-Fi network, and all will be well." Alas, it was not to be. Instead, the Enable Wi-Fi option disappeared once again from the list, and of course my local network was not listed among the wi-fi networks. So, I was back to square one. Mike, I have a Toshiba Satellite. After a little googling about identifying my wireless card, I ran lspci in the terminal window, and I'm seeing: network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 3160 (rev cb) Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 0c) Is this the information you were looking for? Ubuntu 14.nn on this laptop linked successfully to the Internet for quite a while. But maybe Ubuntu 16.04 could have problems with the same networking card? As a last thought, I've rebooted numerous times, so even if I messed up my password a time or two, I don't think I could have messed it up every time. Thank you all so much. If there's more information that would help, ask away. If you can think of any next steps I should try, I'm all ears!
