Just to be clear about what Joplin is: it's a client app written mainly in Javascript that runs on all platforms, primarily intended for mobile use (app stores Android / Apple) but also for Linux and Mac OS X. The server backend that I mentioned, as Jabr discovered, is a separate Webdav/Dropbox-like thing called NextCloud (or you can use Dropbox itself, if you're comfortable with that, but this thread started off with the idea that control over your personal data is important). The notes are synced to the backend and made available across your devices in near-realtime. The commercial Evernote tool has a lot more features but Joplin's promising as a rapidly-evolving open-source project. https://github.com/laurent22/joplin -rich
