But the memory stick does not "mount", it "is mounted" -- by whatever executes the kernel mount(2) call. So what you really observed was that whatever normally mounted your memory stick was failing to do so. The easy case is if the media contents are damaged to the point that you can't mount it with mount(1), but if that's not the case, you've got to find whatever does the mounting and diagnose its problem.
