I haven't seen so much condensed nonsense in weeks, maybe months. I was writing wrappers over 30 years ago to address *exactly* this kind of situation because SunOS 4 and Solaris and Ultrix and... though in my case I was the admin and I wasn't going to alter production systems for my own convenience.
