My impression is that X applications always have a command-line option
to set the resource class. E.g. xterm's man page says
-class string
This option allows you to override xterm's resource class.
Normally it is ???XTerm???, but can be set to another class
such as
???UXTerm??? to override selected resources.
X Toolkit sets the WM_CLASS property using the instance name
and this class value.
I assume it's so you can set various "profiles" for different resource
class names in .Xresources, so different executables of an application
can see different resource values.
