386 and 486 binaries observation

For the longest time, I've tried to run pre-compiled, FTPed files
(Netscape, Mosaic, etc) on my 386DX desktop running Slackware, just to
result in the error message "Exec format error. Wrong Architecture."
Doing a 'file' reveals it is a Linux/i386 ZMAGIC file.
Files which do run on the desktop also claim to be mostly QMAGIC. A
couple Slackware-included binaries are ZMAGIC.
I do have 486 instructions set compatibility compiled into the kernel.
But, if I try to run the same binary file on my 486SX laptop, no
problems, and, no mention of ZMAGIC.
Guess it's time to upgrade my desktop motherboard to a 486DX. More money :-(
This, I believe, is kernel and Slackware version independent.
