Hi,
Does anyone on this list have any experience with SWT (SW Technologies)
ftp://ftp.swt.com
They sell pre-configured linux pc's
and I'm considering buying a high-end laptop from them.
As an aside, the top of my list is currently a NEC Versa vs a Toshiba.
Does anyone have any experiences to report?
Raman,
I have a Toshiba laptop. It`s a bit of a klunker as notebooks go.
It`s a 386-16 w/ gas plasma display. It`s kind of slow, but the real
boon to it is that I can plug a 16bit and/or an 8bit card in it. I
have Linux running on it with X windows configured. It dosen`t have a
battery and weighs about 25 pounds, but it`s pretty portable.
I`ve seen them used for 500$. A laptop everyone can afford.
One thing I would look out for is that the old Toshibas have the disk
geometry hard coded in the BIOS. They probably don`t do this now, but
for old laptops [like mine] a disk upgrade has to include a BIOS
upgrade. Just look in the setup and verify you can set the number of
cylinders, sectors, and heads to any value.
Dan.
