lpr/lpd problem

I am trying to set up lpd on my linux machine
and, unlike previous times, I am having a lot
of difficulty.  In particular, the status
of printer (called "cdj") is claimed to be:
   waiting for cdj to become ready (offline ?)
even though I can printer directly to the device (/dev/lp1) just fine.
(this message evidently come from lpd).
Has anyone else run into this problem?
