Modem that doesn't work on Linux

I agree with you when it comes to WinModems. If I was to buy a modem alone
(or a combination modem), I wouldn't buy any WinModem. It _should_ be
avoided at all costs!
Well, I got this modem with the computer I bought... a Packard Bell (I know
I shouldn't have, but I got dragged in by the price they had to offer and
at the time, I was a student).
Before this system, I had another system which had a Sound 2 sound
card/modem. I think that modem was also a WinModem. I managed to get that
one working on Linux without too much trouble.
Is it likely that some WinModems will work on Linux while others will not?
Also, this modem is a 56K modem. I heard that Windows NT has problems with
some 56K modems. Could it be a similar problem with Linux?
