Assuming you have all the kernel sources.
The first step should be to configure your kernel:
make config - character cell
make menuconfig - uses curses
make xconfig - graphical uses tcl/tk
One you have completed and saved your configuration, it is usually best to
make your dependencies and start with a clean slate:
make dep
make clean
Now you need to make the images:
make bZimage or make bzlilo
Then make modules and make modules_install
I always build a new kernel immediately upgrading from an older release, and
rarely have errors on the Alpha or on Intel. The most important step is the
configuration because it sets up some of the header files needed.
