running local DNS/bind with diald

Greetings,

I'm looking for some expert knowledge on using diald with locally
configured DNS.  My problem is that DNS returns "unknown host or domain"
during the diald modem connection time.  My assumption is that I need to
lengthen the timeout named waits for DNS queries from the root server.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
