The bright spot here is that there *are* alternatives now. It's
going to be very interesting to watch what happens over the next, say, 5
years. There are at least 3 contending solutions for "the last mile"
(phone company pairs, cable, and wireless), undoubtedly others, and
there's certainly plently of demand for the bandwidth. The *real*
winner is us consumers. Whodathunk 5 years ago that we'd be grousing
about paying $70/month for a few hundred Kb/sec Internet link?
