Here is the real answer for SuSE:
After you first boot from diskette, you will get a linuxrc screen:
Kernel Messages
Harddisks / CD ROMs
Modules
PCI
etc.

Go through what you need here. This loads any modules, such as SCSI, 
PCMCIA, Network.
