I bet if you check /etc/passwd, you'll find that those numbers  don't
correspond  to any actual user ids.  What ls does when the numeric id
doesn't belong to any user, is to simply show the number.  There's  a
good  chance  that something has garbaged /etc/passwd.  This can be a
bit of a problem ...

Try "ls -l /etc/passwd*" and see if you have any backup copies.

(I wonder how linux handles this?  I'm not sure I want to  experiment
with it on any machine that is being used.)
