On one of my machines I have an entry in my /etc/fstab that looks like:
/dev/hda1 /dos msdos defaults 1 1
when the machine comes up, it mounts this drive at /dos. I can then cd into
/dos to see any of the files in the C: partition of the dos/windows
partition. If you try a mkfs I believe you will erase the windows partition.
