I don't consider any of the Sparc or Alpha laptops that have been
built to be viable laptop systems. None of them have batteries
that last more than an hour. They're easy-to-move computers that
are designed to be plugged into the wall, not true laptops.
They're also horribly expensive.

By non-Intel laptops, I was thinking more of x86 systems with
processors made by other companies. AMD now makes mobile K6-2
chips, which have shown up in a number of recent laptops, but
they have only been available for about a year. I've also seen a
couple of very-low-end systems based on the Cyrix MediaGX (a CPU
with the video controller integrated; the integrated video uses
the main DRAM for video refresh, so you take a performance hit).
I haven't yet heard about any plans for mobile Athlon processors;
the current design is a power hog, so AMD will have some work to
do before an Athlon laptop is feasible.

I suppose a PowerBook is another possible non-Intel choice. But I
don't like Apple much more than I like Intel.
