Thanks everyone it's working now (that was some quick replies btw) mentioning 
the kernel source made me think to check exactly what was installed.  It 
turned out when I didn't have the kernel source installed, only the kernel 
headers.  It seems to me that it should have been enough but apparently not.

Completely unrelated, but I have to say something about it:
anti-aliased fonts ROCK!!!!!
