I bought my wife a Canon S-100 (on the advice of Philip Greenspun at
photo.net). I love it. It's a small, light 2.1 Mpixel camera with 2x
optical zoom (think 28mm - 56mm ish) and 2x digital zoom. It uses
compact flash, good for direct upload into a laptop with a compact
flast to pcmcia adapter. It also has a USB port. It is reported to
work with gPhoto via USB but I've yet to try it.
The closest runner-up was the Nikon. I'm sure John Abreau can give
you the low-down on those.
