Any way around the ext2 2GiB limit?

I tried touse TAR to transfer a Windoze partition from an old disk to a
new, but it abended with a "file too large" error.

I thought this was a reflection of the old BIOS and the 8 GB limit, but
now I realize it's not: it's a limit of ext2.
