I tried a number of things, and after playing around with the AS/400 telnet
system I discovered a way to send a limited set of control or escape
sequences. You have to tell telnet that when it recieves an F5 to send esc
to the remote system. As a result I've gotten some functionality working,
but it's still a _very_ painfull process. So far vi has been the most
usable, but even that is hobbled by the AS/400 terminal.
