experience with OpenOffice

Hi,
  Does anybody have experience with OpenOffice and RedHat 7.2.  I tried to 
install OpenOffice641c and it crashed minutes startup and the system came to 
a grinding halt right after start.  I could never get it to work after that 
and the installation "repair" mode was relatively useless.
  Is it just less painful to buy StarOffice instead or am I just not using 
the right stable build of OpenOffice?
