Mandrake vs. Red Hat

I try not to be.  It seemed this might be a quiet enough place for
such a question.

For example, I have heard that Mandrake put a lot of effort into
making Linux more usable and more easily maintainable?  To what extent
did they succeed?  What was the cost?  (Can one do compatible
text-based admin work?)

It seems there are matters of substance that don't have to reduce to
shouting.
