The race to GCC 3

We've had GCC 3.x installed here on Tru64 Unix, and it has caused us a lot
of grief with one of our partners (many thousands of lines of code).

Linux 8.1, due October 7. All three include GCC 3.2 and kernel 2.4.19.

adopting new software. Distributions for other architectures will probably also lag, since GCC 3 hasn't been as well-tested on other processors yet.

other.
