Is there a difference between usb and usb 2.0?

From my (limited) experience, USB 2.0 drives will work with USB 1.1
laptops. However, the speed will be very slow. USB 2.0 PCMCIA cards
usually run $25-50.
What kind of laptop is it? Does it have firewire? Maybe another option
is to swap the CD drive in the laptop for a used CD-RW drive?
Your laptop is most likely USB 1.1. Most laptops until very recently
included 1.1 only.
