You're almost there; there's probably no reason to wipe the drive and start
over. I've never seen the LABEL part of the grub.conf -- here's mine in its
entirety:
default 0
timeout 5
title=The Mighty Penguin
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda3
Short, sweet, and to the point. Maybe you should try a really stripped-down
grub.conf?
