On the Linux side: if you use a distribution where all the packages you
need can easily be reinstalled (say, Debian: dpkg --get-selections) you
may be satisfied by backing up your user directories and configuration
files to CD-R, along with a bootable CD-R for rescue. CDs are fairly
cheap, very common, extremely portable between machines, and you might
want a burner for other reasons.
Otherwise, you might want to look at:
- an external FireWire hard disk big enough to hold everything. This
lets you get back up and running faster than anything else.
- an external FireWire tape drive, which will let you store several
iterations of "everything". On the other hand, when was the last time
you made a full backup for the heck of it?
