I'm kind of guessing based on the tutorial that was posted
(http://linux.oreillynet.com/pub/a/linux/2002/12/05/RAID.html page 2), but
I think you may need to explicitly "fail" the drive and "remove" it from
the array before you can try to "add" it back in:
mdadm /dev/md0 --fail /dev/hdc1 --remove /dev/hdc1
