I've been running Gentoo for a year or so now; I am definately not in it for 
the bleeding-edge code.  The portage system works great for me; I've only had 
some minor quibbles with it.  The advantage, I'd say, isn't so much the 
mega-optimized system as it is the ease of management -- config files never 
get overwritten and dependency management is excellent (but not perfect).
There is, however, one drawback: due to the build-from-scratch process, 
initial setup time for a Gentoo box can be gargantuan in comparison with 
other distros, although optional pre-compiled binaries available in varying 
stages allow you to skip the laborious base system build.
