I learned the downside of teaching through my sig-other the past couple of
years. Basically, not only do you get questionable retirement benefits if you
stay in the profession, but you also get zero job security until you're
tenured. In Massachusetts at least, you're just as vulnerable as a high-tech
sales guy to getting abruptly terminated without explanation--for the entire
first *three years* of teaching. Being a member of a "protected class" gets
you zip, and your union dues serve only to protect the jobs of the lobbyists.
Unless the administrator does something completely stupid, you have no
recourse other than to file for unemployment and find another job--in another
profession, because you probably won't get another teaching job in today's
market.
Yeah, teaching. Not so attractive either lately, though public-school
teaching does pay better than adjunct college teaching (so my friends tell
me).
