Hi Duane,

The Linux kernel will automatically and dynamically use "available"
memory to cache various things including files.  This is a very
efficient approach since memory is orders-of-magnitude faster than even
the fastest hard disks.

There are numerous posts on the Net that describe whats going on -- try
googling for "linux memory usage" or similar terms.
