Hmm, what have I been doing with fetchmail and mutt all these years ;-)

If ThunderBird can't access your local mail spool, you could always run
a POP or IMAP server locally (which should probably be restricted to
local access).  It should be possible in this case to access your mail
from Thunderbird.
