Linux on Alpha...

It was alluded to in another post, but gentoo exists for the alpha. There 
aren't a huge number of people running it, so basically very few things 
are marked "stable". I doubt the Debian situation is much better. I don't 
own an alpha, but in my days at Microway I got gentoo working on an LX164 
alpha with KDE, etc. mostly just to prove that I could.

Regardless of whether you go with gentoo, you should know that there is a 
downloadable "live disk" you can boot to help you do whatever you might want
to do with a live disk built for alpha. It's on all the gentoo mirrors, with
URLs like: 
http://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo/releases/alpha/2005.0/installcd/

They also have documentation that's thorough enough to install a source 
distro, so if you run into problems, you might find it a handy reference.
