I just got port scanned...

Guys,
I could see an odd pattern in my network usage, (I run the system
monitor gnome panel applet,)
and my disk was making odd repetitive access noises. I then checked my
log files and lo and behold,
I was being port scanned by someone from 200.21.18.136. What's the
mechanism by which
a rule gets added to my firewall or hosts.deny file when I get port
scanned? Also, I noticed that
a file /var/log/btmp got rather large. What tool do I use to examine the
content of /var/log/btmp?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers. Steve.
