Ubuntu weird characters in PuTTY

I recently switched from Mandrake 10 to Ubuntu 7.04, and I'm having a
problem I didn't have before. When I connect with PuTTY, and try to
read e-mail using mutt, my screen gets all screwed up by messages with
weird non-printing characters in the subject line or in the body. I
never used to get this with Mandrake, and I'm using the same PuTTY. So
I assume it's something about the terminal settings that Ubuntu uses for
the PuTTY/SSH connection.
Anyone know what this might be, or how to fix it? For what it's worth,
stty -a gives me this:
speed 38400 baud; rows 64; columns 80; line = 0;
intr = ^C; quit = ^\; erase = ^?; kill = ^U; eof = ^D; eol = <undef>;
eol2 = <undef>; swtch = <undef>; start = ^Q; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; rprnt
= ^R;
werase = ^W; lnext = ^V; flush = ^O; min = 1; time = 0;
