Well, I finally got it!
icecast2 was always working for as a server, but I didn't have a working
config file or method to send audio to it, until I found
http://www.gnuware.com/icecast/chap_08_02.html and took the example 8-2
sample ices2.xml file from it and created a fresh config.xml file on my
system from which to run ices2 -c ./config.xml from. I did perform some
tweaking of the config.xml before finally running it, but as soon as it
took, I got the streaming audio I wanted.
Finally!
Thanks to all.
